Your new wood bowl or utensil should last for years and generations with proper care. Wood is beautiful and natural but vulnerable to sudden humidity and temperature changes. The two (2) finishes available for wood creations require different care.
Items with a natural wood patina with little shine were finished with heat treated walnut oil. The heat inactivates walnut protein that can lead to nut allergies. These bowls/utensils will need to be re-oiled periodically (6-12 months) to maintain their patina and help prevent drying and cracking. Mahoney’s Utility Finish and Doctor’s Woodshop Walnut Finishing Oil are the only ones we recommend. These can be found online.
Items with gloss shine have been sealed with a lacquer and do not need to be oiled but only wiped out with damp cloth after usage. If damaged it can be sealed again with lacquer.
Walnut oil that is processed for wood items will penetrate, cure, and harden after a few weeks and will give protection for your heirloom. Walnut oil, vegetable oil, olive oil, and mineral oils bought at grocery stores or health food stores are not processed for wood and will not cure and harden and have the potential to sour and turn rancid if applied.
Stains: Whatever you put in your bowl may soak into the wood. Some berries (especially blue berries) and some salad dressings may leave a stain that will not come out but may develop the ‘character’ of the piece.
Washing: Wipe with damp cloth. Use a soft kitchen sponge with a small amount of mild dishwashing soap only if needed. Dry thoroughly with a kitchen cloth.
Storage: Wood items need to breathe and have fresh air. They can develop mold/mildew if they are sealed in a plastic bag or container. If necessary, you can consider a paper bag or cardboard box. Comments on this handout are individual opinions and suggestions based on experience and information from other woodturners.
